SCRIPTURE READING: Mark 1:29-39

“On leaving the synagogue, he went with James and John straight to the house of Simon and Andrew. Now Simon’s mother-in-law had gone to bed with fever, and they told him about her straightaway. He went to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began to wait on them. That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils…”

Meditation: Try to answer as many questions as possible

1.      Why did the disciples tell Jesus about Simon’s mother-in-law immediately?  Do you think that they know Jesus could heal her?

2.      When did the people come to see Jesus?  What type of people did they bring to Jesus?  What did Jesus do to them?  What does this tell you about the person and character of Jesus?

3.      What did Jesus do long before dawn?  Why did he leave early in the morning?  Did he bring anyone with him?  Why?

4.      Did the disciples want to stay back in the town?  What was Jesus’ response?  Why did Jesus want to go to the neighbouring country towns?

By Heart: Reflect on this in light of your daily life situation

Can life be beautiful?  An optimist sees the glass half full, while a pessimist sees the glass half empty.  How do you see your life?  Half full or hall empty?  A life filled with hope, opportunities and possibilities?  Or a life filled with disappointments, failures and regrets?  One minute we are healthy, another minute we are sick.  One minute we have a good job, another minute we are jobless.  One minute we are someone, another minute we are no one.  One minute we have friends, another we have none.  One minute we have a life, another minute we question our reason for living.

“…because that is why I came”:  Jesus came to preach the good news.  Do not underestimate the power of the Word of God.  The proclamation of the Word of God leads to healing and freedom from evil bondages.  Those who were sick and suffering and possessed by evil spirits were brought to him and they were healed and liberated.  Jesus never turns anyone away.  Today, he still waits for us to come to him, bringing our sickness, our emptiness, our broken lives so that he can heal us and makes us whole again and thus our lives can be beautiful once again.

Intercessions:

1.      For Martina Chen who has lung cancer, that during this difficult time, she may have a strong faith and a good spirit.

2.      For the ill and elderly in our families, that they may not feel abandoned or neglected but experience the care and love of the people around them.

3.      For young people struggling in life, that they may find meaning and purpose in the unconditional love of God

4.      For all of us, that our hearts may be opened to the Word of God so that healing can take root immediately in every aspect our lives.

Covenant Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, by your suffering, death and resurrection, you give us new life:  a life filled with joy and purpose; a life only you can give it, for you are the source of life.  Guide us on our pilgrimage of life, that following you faithfully as your disciples, we may witness boldly to the world, your love and truth.  Enlighten our minds and hearts that your Word which we read and meditated may take roots in our lives.  Help us not to fall into sin and if we do fall due to our human weakness, bring us back to you for you are the way, the truth and the life. We also pray for all our brothers and sisters, wherever they are, who are committed to this prayer, that their faith may be strengthened, their hope assured and their love fulfilled.  In your name we humbly pray.  Amen
