Scripture Reading:  Mk. 13:33-37

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Be on your guard, stay awake, because you never know when the time will come.  It is like a man travelling abroad: he has gone from home, and left his servants in charge, each with his own task; and he has told the doorkeeper to stay awake.  So stay awake, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming, evening, midnight, cockcrow, dawn; if he comes unexpectedly, he must not find you asleep.  And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake!’

Meditation: Try to answer as many questions as possible

1.     Who was Jesus talking to?  What ‘time’ was Jesus talking about?  What does one have to do to stay awake?  What is the opposite of staying awake?

2.     Who is the master?  Before he travelled abroad, what did he do?

3.     What was the role of the doorkeeper?  Why was his role important?

4.     At what time is the master of the house coming home?  Why doesn’t the master return in daylight?

5.     What should be the servants or doorkeeper be doing at the master’s return?  At Gethsamane, what did the 3 disciples do?  What did Jesus say to them?

By Heart: Reflect on this in light of your daily life situation

During the night, everything is silent and shrouded in mystery; everything is quiet.  During the night, only the thief and those who want to do evil move around, those who like darkness because they do not want anybody to find out what they do.  Life will start over again in the morning.  Here then, is why somebody has to keep awake:  to wait for the light.

-         Do we wait for the light or do we prefer to dwell in the darkness?  Are you more comfortable in the light or in the darkness?

Adventus (Latin) means coming.  Advent refers to the 2 comings of Christ.  The first coming was in Bethlehem 2000 years ago.  The second coming will be at the end of time.  We live in between these 2 comings of Christ.  We are reminded by Jesus himself to ‘stay awake’ because he can come at anytime.

-         If Jesus were to come to your home today, what are you going to do to prepare for his coming?  Will his coming bring you joy or sadness; peace or stress; peace or disappointment?  Why?

Intercessions:

1.  For the Unimas Catholic Student Society (UNICS), that the Lord will bless the students and make a way for them to go to church on Sundays

2.     For Alice who is having difficulty sleeping, that the Lord will bless her and grant her a good and restful sleep

3.     For Kevin who is having difficulty in his studies, that the Holy Spirit might inspire him to persevere in his studies diligently

4.     For Puvan who is having some difficulty with friends, that the Lord will pour down his love upon them so that they might reconcile with one another

5.      For all of us, that we may stay awake throughout the season of Advent to see what God is trying to tell us during this new liturgical year

Covenant Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, by your suffering, death and resurrection, you give us new life:  a life filled with joy and purpose; a life only you can give it, for you are the source of life.  Guide us on our pilgrimage of life, that following you faithfully as your disciples, we may witness boldly to the world, your love and truth.  Enlighten our minds and hearts that your Word which we read and meditated may take roots in our lives.  Help us not to fall into sin and if we do fall due to our human weakness, bring us back to you for you are the way, the truth and the life. We also pray for all our brothers and sisters, wherever they are, who are committed to this prayer, that their faith may be strengthened, their hope assured and their love fulfilled.  In your name we humbly pray.  Amen
